What I learned yesterday – I’ve been getting my can kicked in college football (below.500) and was talking to friend from Las Vegas whom I haven’t spoken to since early September. He’s up on all happenings on the betting scene in the town and he had a very interesting observation about college football. He said guys that are math-based handicappers are having a below average to bad years (that would be me), but streak players or guys that fly from the seat of their pants are doing quite well, because how they look at numbers and situations is different and things have gone their way.

What you I thought yesterday- Isn’t it ridiculous how those players looked wearing earflaps during the baseball games over the weekend? Players wearing essentially ski masks with area cut out so they could see. Obviously the cold weather really came early to the East but the later baseball goes, you have to figure the worse the weather. Baseball lucked out to have these four teamsw still playing and the baseball ratings are very good, but that won’t happen every year. My suggestion would be to schedule seven day/night doubleheaders, similar to the old days. That way teams can still have all the revenue of separate games and the season can be shorten one week. I understand all the ramifications, but playing baseball in November is asinine.

A little punch-drunk Sunday

Good Lord did Ohio State suck or what? Five turnovers and five sacks against Purdue who had lost five in a row! Though I personally saw Air Force at -10 first thing Saturday morning, I know it went to-10.5 quickly and to -11 at the close, thus we’ll take a 1-3 week for college football with Stanford loss. What you I thought this morning- I had Washington +6.5 last night and Arizona State threw a 50+ yard touchdown pass with: 05 left to win 24-17. I had Stanford +4 and they were outscored 14-0 in the fourth quarter to lose by five. I was rooting for both Notre Dame and the L.A. Angels yesterday and you know how that turned out. I’m surprised my house wasn’t robbed and the car wasn’t stolen. Whoops, better go check the garage.

What I thought yesterday- While it’s easy to pick on the Denver Broncos uniforms, I wonder who pays for those uniforms and how much they cost? Yet these NFL teams would never think about lowering ticket prices. If I owned a NFL team and I had a game that was going to be blacked out in my town, I would have an online lottery signup for remaining tickets, charging $10.00 per entry. The winners get to go to the game for just ten bucks, but the place is full, plus the team and stadium receives all the parking and concession revenue. Those that did not win print their online receipt and can use it at the team’s gift shop (online or in person) or take it to local bars you’ve made deals with and get $10.00 off the price of food or drink and can watch the game there.

What I saw today – All the talk surrounding national title hopes for the loser of Saturday's Alabama/Virginia Tech game irks Tide coach Nick Saban. He doesn't think either team should be counted out of the hunt for the BCS crown based on a loss to a top-10 team on the first Saturday of the fall. Saban pointed to his 2003 LSU team that won a national championship with a regular-season blemish and the 2007 Tiger champs actually lost twice before winning the SEC title and beating Ohio State to claim the BCS crown. "So now we're talking about the first game of the season, you're out of it," Saban said Monday. "It's horrible. It's a horrible thought for any team to be out of anything for one game." Yesterday’s 3-0 record was sweeeet, raising record to 209-141-3, 59.7 percent since April 10. Today we come back with a system that is 83.6 percent and sparkling this season also. What I learned today – Ryan Spilborghs' grand slam in the bottom of the 14th inning gave the Rockies a 6-4 win against the Giants. Since 1900, only one player hit a walk-off grand slam in a later inning. On July 28, 1951 Clyde Vollmer of the Red Sox hit a grand slam in the bottom of the 16th inning to beat the Indians at Fenway Park. The last walk-off slam in the 14th inning was hit by Jason Giambi, on May 17, 2002 at Yankee Stadium against the Twins. (Thanks, Elias)

Make a mark on a Monday

Slipped a bit on Sunday with 1-2 day, as Mark Buehrle continues to struggle since throwing “Perfecto”. The LCC consensus has left a couple of winners and goes for third straight with Free Play. What I thought today – With the Yankees winning the series in Boston, they have shown their current superiority. New York is on pace to win about 101 games, which would mean the Red Sox would have to go 32-7 to finish the season to surpass them, very unlikely. Instead, Boston should work on holding off Texas for wild card, get everybody healthy and hopefully be playing best baseball come October and see if they can make another strong run.

Almost forgot to mention about Phillies triple play yesterday. Though triple plays don't happen often, whenever they do, I'm always reminded of Yogi Berraism which states, "Triple plays can really take out of an inning."

In Search of Perfect Sunday

Another rock solid 2-1 Saturday, leads us into Sunday. The Best System is a little frightful backing a bad team, however 80 percent odds in your favor is exceptional. What I learned yesterday – Michael Cuddyer hit his 20th home run of the year to help lead the Twins to an 8-7 victory over the Royals Saturday night, becoming the fourth Twins' player to hit 20 homers this season (Justin Morneau, Joe Mauer and Jason Kubel are the others). This marks the first time in 22 years that the Twins have had at least four players hit 20 home runs in the same season. In 1987, a year in which the Twins won the World Series, Tom Brunansky, Gary Gaetti, Kent Hrbek and Kirby Puckett all went deep at least 20 times.
